Travel Articles

Tips for travel article writers

Writing articles may seem to be a hard nut to crack. However, it is not so. It is all about keeping some points in mind before you go ahead with the task.

If you are into travel business then you must be aware of the fact that travel & writing go hand in hand. Most major newspapers have travel sections, hundreds of magazines are devoted to travel & many authors have successfully penned down articles and journals related to travel.

Now, this is not an indication that if you write an article on travel, you have paved your way in to making big money. The reason is that mere large audience for travel pose in not enough to offer them articles & earn money.

The key is to know your subject thoroughly & bring it to life via good, creative & substantial writing. If you are looking forward to write an article on tourist markets, on your own, it would be a viable approach to do so. It is most likely that targeting hot tourist spots such as Washington's San Juan Island, Northern Minnesota, the Black Hills of South Dakota or Nova Scotia may be successful in making you earn a modest income.

However, before trying it out, you must conduct a thorough analysis on the size of your local tourist market. Try to make sure that there isn't enough competition, as the visitor may not be interested in something that he is hearing or reading about since childhood.

Writing an article is not just about penning down exclusive adjectives & including incredible phrases & writing down poetic lines. You also require good marketing skills & winning strategies to make your website reach the top. You require two basic things to succeed in the field of Travel writing.

  • An interesting topic
  • An expertise in writing a nonfiction book.

The key is to try out something new and uniquely creative.

How to write about travel
Writing about travel requires thorough research. You need to read dozens of articles, books or journals before planning on your own travel e-book. Reading dozens of other guides would facilitate you to decide on what kind of book you would like to write. The effort would also identify various market niches that may not have been exploited by your competitors yet.

The main point is to have an idea on what you want to write about & what would you like to portray. For instance, if you have decided on writing about a travel destination, then you must make sure that the article must possess the clarity required to convey the "sense of place."

Try concentrating on the description of the place, using several anecdotes and offering some expert tips on traveling to that place. These are just a few techniques that can bring your destination on the web & add life to it.

If you have decided to write a brochure or promotional article on travel, you must keep in mind that you are selling a destination and hence it must contain the required thrill & adventure in it that would allure visitors to it.

Never overwrite or oversell. These two techniques may offend your visitors. Writing for the web is equivalent to writing for print media & you must keep in mind some special rules. These rules would enhance the readability on a computer screen thereby attracting more visitors to it.

  • Keep paragraphs short. Lengthy blocks of text would only offer the feeling of 'ennui' to the visitors.

  • Use bullet points where appropriate in order to emphasize on specific sentences.

  • Try to avoid excessive scrolling by using page breaks where necessary.

  • Emphasize on linking to other content wherever possible. This doesn't apply only within your site. You must emphasize offering link to other sites to provide apt information to the reader.
