BODY BA'SIX'

So you love the way your body responds to everything around you… However, you may still wonder why people, in their perfect 'healthy state' experience certain bodily functions that are considered as the worst social embarrassment possible. In fact most people who undergo these bodily functions are aware that these are the basic functions one can't do away with.

There are many mysteries related to the most common facts about a human body structure. You must have always wondered why do some people possess those beautiful dimpled cheeks; some are blessed with blue eyes and some with svelte body no matter what & how much food they gorge in.

This is also true about some common bodily functions such as sneezing, snoring & yawning. Some individuals are blessed with not having the urge to exhibit these embarrassing bodily aberrations in public but some can't really help it.

The fact is that these bodily aberrations have their own reasons to exist. Given below are the six body basics one needs to understand, the reason they exist and the method to keep them away in case they become the cause of embarrassment.

a) Belching:
This is one of the most embarrassing situations one has to come across with, as the spectators find it extremely detestable.

What is a Berp/Belch?
Burps and Belches are just the sound of gas that exits from your body. Human body swallows air while eating. These air bubbles wait to make an exodus from the body. Extra gas escapes from the stomach, travels up the oesophagus & comes out of the mouth. If we take this in a lighter term, a belch actually sends you the signal that the stomach enjoyed the food you offered it.

How to get rid of it?
The best way is to seek medical help if you are suffering from excessive belching.

Facts:

  • Intestinal Bacteria may also be responsible for a lot of gas produced inside the body.
b) Snoring
Snoring may not seem to be a problem to you because you are not the person who suffer the consequences but the people around you.
Most ENT consultants term snoring as a disease. This mainly results from airway obstruction. According to Dr. Atul Mittal, ENT Consultant, GM Modi Hospital "Whether the problem lies in the nose, throat or whether it is something that is an offshoot of obesity, the reason of its existence varies from individual to individual."

How to get rid?
The first & foremost check your weight. As soon as you experience snoring it is recommendable to consult your ENT doctor.

Facts:

  • Airway obstruction and obesity are interrelated.
  • People, who suffer from snoring, experience a very restless sleep that results in to lethargy and ultimately leads to obesity.
c) Sneezing
"May God bless you!" is the phrase that most often slips out of the mouth when one sneezes. This is justified by the famous saying that an evil force hovers around a person when he/she sneezes.
It all begins with a little twitch; and take shape of 'propah serial killers.'
Doctors justify this bodily function as a reflex. They don't consider it as an ailment. Sneezing is a method that a human body expels foreign particle that gets into nose or airway. This process is good for health as it eliminates harmful bacteria & germs from the body.
However, sometimes excessive sneezing may be due to an allergy from pollen or animal fur to some more complicated stuff.

What measures you must take?
Always keep a hanky at hand & make wise cracks about your own sneeze before others do.

Facts:
  • Some people sneeze when they see bright light.
  • Most of us close our eyes when we sneeze.
d) Yawning
Most people associate yawning with the desire to have a nap or sleep. However, experts believe that it is an involuntary reflex action and research has not proved that it serves some special bodily purpose.
The process is controlled & mediated by certain sensors in the brain. Yawning is contagious & many wonder why it set off others? According to experts, "yawning is triggered by certain things & one of them could be the sight of a yawning person. It tickles the sleep area of the brain & sets of all that yawning."

How to get rid of it?
You may shield the process with the help of a handkerchief and you can get rid of it by keeping your brain busy with happy thoughts.

Facts
  • It takes around 6 seconds for yawn to last.
  • The first yawn in humans is usually 11 weeks after conception.
e) Hiccupping
Hiccupping may be a signal of happiness for some as it delivers a message that someone is remembering you. But excess of it may be very irritating for the person who is experiencing it as well as people around this person. Scientific definition of hiccupping goes as "involuntary spasmodic reflexes caused by the contraction of the smooth muscles of the diaphragm."

How to pacify it?
Consume cold milk or cold water.

Facts
  • Some researchers believe it may be a throwback to a time when our ancestors had gills to help them breathe.
  • Taking deep breath would help you getting rid of it.
f) Tummy growling
The intestines possess a wealth of nerves and these nerves have brain of their own. When a person gets stressed or becomes anxious about something, the bowel movements suffer. An empty stomach or gorging your stomach with a very rich & heavy meal generally results into tummy growling.

How to stay away?
Eat on time & in moderation.

Facts:
The rumbling sound of tummy results from the rubbing of the stomach wall with the fluids inside.
